ON THE WAY HOME

A 9-year-old girl Ai-Yun, who is bullied at school because of her mentally handicapped mother, decides to put an end to her trouble when she walks home with her mother this afternoon.

The story is told through the eyes of this little girl. The society’s oppression, in this case peer pressure, can be glimpsed moving in the background. While Ai-Yun struggles to escape from her mother’s love, she is forced to face the truth of an accident long ago which caused her mother’s mental illness.

Following Christ is harder than it seems as we are often compelled to compromise our Christian values by letting a secular worldview warp our perception of the truth. It can just be rather embarrassing to admit to others that yes, one is a Christian, when popularity and public opinion is of utmost importance today. It is a quest for self-knowledge. Eventually worn out from attempting to protect her self-image, Ai-Yun must learn to reconcile with herself and embrace her mother’s sacrifice, to find the way home and to see the true beauty of life.
